- Jersey shore is a reality television series on MTV that follows eight housemates, spending their summers together, the show debuted large amounts of controversy regarding the use of words 'Guido' and 'Guidette'- as these are potrayals of italian stereotypes. They also received scrutiny from locals because the cast members were not residents of the area.
- Controversy: MTV received criticism from Italian Americans fro the way in which they marketed the shows, as one promotion stated that the show was to follow, "eight of the hottest, tannest, craziest Guidos'
- 'Guido' and 'Guidette' is generally regarded as an ethnic slur when referring to Italians.
- Parodies: An episode featuring several parodies were made into a special entitled Jersey shore: Spoof'd, which aired on January 16, 2010 - featuring a cast commentary highlighting internet and television spoofs that have sprung up as a direct response to the show.
The jersey shore saga: Friggin' twilight
Season 1: Episode 1
- Reality show starts with an update on what is going to happen in the season. This is done through a series of edits- which will create excitement and bring in a wide range of audience, from scenes including boozy nights, fist fights, hooking up with guys and girls, etc.
- Introduction of cast: home videos are used for audiences to get to know who they are and what they are about to bring to the season. This includes... saying.... and .... saying.... . Different camera shots are used where in Angelina's room camera is at a high angle where it shows the subject from above, this has the effect of making them appear less powerful by diminishing the subject- which could be sending a message to the audience.
themed song intro is used in every episode, where Jersey Shore song includes lyrics like, "Get crazy get wild, lets party get loud, if you wanna have fun and do something, if you wanna have fun and do something..."- this creates an introduction of what we could expect from the show as a whole.
- There is also a introduction in the video below of the cast- as they all have a short say, for example, Jenni Jwoww says "After I've had sex with a guy, i will rip their heads off..."
- Appearance: Eight housemates look the same, Tanned bodies and faces, where they all wear a lot of make-up- In her home video, sammi says, "..." (Boys wear lipgloss and lip balm= unusual)
Girls clothes are revealing and unflattering while boys clothes are usually just a t-shirt (mainly Ed-hardy) and jeans.
There is a huge difference in these two pictures as in the first image, they are being something there not. whiile in the second they are being true to who they really are, Guidos and Guidettes.
Expected or unexpected: Scenes can be very predictable, for example in clubs you know the boys are looking for girls or they are going to get drunk and do a few crazy moves or start a fight.
Names of cast is used regularly so audiences can get to know them. For example, there are one-to-one interviews- where it almost gives a connection between cast and audience.
Uses and gratification theory: mainly Entertainment and some scenes where audience can relate to housemates. For example when Jenni and boyfriend break-up.
